Maude Anne May:
I am a collage artist – layering images utilizing hand stitching and photography. Compelled to create visual stories, I assemble discarded snapshots, copyright-free Library of Congress photos and my own photographic works, all of which are printed directly onto linen or cotton. These images are combined with used and new fabrics to build simple and complex pieces. I strive to move the viewer towards discovering and honoring the mysteries of the people, ideas, places and possessions that were once deemed precious and have now been left behind. Leah Kohlenberg
I've painted for more than two decades, and as someone who is always working quickly, always in a rush, always a bit wild and messy - my artwork reflects these traits, too. My best work is done in quick, choppy strokes, with plenty of drips and LOTS of layers, editing and integrating along the way. Though this started with forest and rural scenes, I've recently started applying this technique to cityscapes, which you see here. They are challenging, but rewarding and the technique evokes a dimensional, complex mood. |
