Statement:
After a long artistic practice that began with sculpture in clay and assemblage, Linda Tross is now primarily a painter of abstract landscapes, which she renders interpretively rather than objectively, to capture what is essential and lasting. She expresses themes of change, power, and renewal in nature. Unlike traditional landscapes, her paintings are never tranquil, but rather embody the constant movement, upheaval, and inventiveness of nature. "Natural forces--erosion, volcanism, glacial shifts--are the seeds of my work," she says. "Relative to human experience, the earth's perpetual change through time is a kind of permanence." While her earlier sculptures were often rendered with humor and satire and took aim at particular causes through feminist and political lenses (see Conversation I), she has shifted lately to painting that touches on larger matters, toward the less ephemeral, toward the elevation of nature as a lasting value. |
