3 Miles of Possible is a 4-4.5 hour durational performance in which the artist moves through a series of spatial pathways that also act as drawings and/or spells. Along these pathways, Austin activates objects, actions, sounds, text, movement, scores and collaboration with other artists. In the journeys of 3 Miles of Possible, the artist both follows the directive of objects and also molds the objects. This exhibition is a display of selected scores/drawings for the performance, as well as objects that were employed during the performance.
Artist Bio: Linda Austin is a choreographer and performer whose 40-year trajectory as a maker includes more than two decades in downtown New York City, two years in Mexico and the last 24 years back in her home state of Oregon. Linda lives and plays with movement, sound, language, and objects in a process of ongoingness, summoning contingent and provisional form out of multiple possibilities. Her work of the last 10-15 years touches upon ephemerality, transmission, mortality, precarity, porous and mutable selfhood, and utopian longings. Awards include the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Merce Cunningham Award, RACC's Individual Artist Fellowship, and two Oregon Arts Commission Fellowships. She is co-founder and Artistic Director of Performance Works NorthWest.
