I use information to create systems that produce images. The long immersion in portraying this information is somehow deeply engaging to me.
The watercolor monotypes show the changing patterns of local weather. Data from the National Climate Data Center shows Portland’s weather in 2015 and 1955 in the upper and lower halves of the images. The colors in each day are calibrated by the high and low temperatures of the day and divided into two areas by the sunrise and sunset. Rain, when it appears, creates areas of denser color. An anecdotal comparison of such a small sample proves nothing, but the trend has been clear for some time. The totality of climate change can be overwhelming, but dealing with a small piece at a time makes it easier to take, at least for now.
The Site Series uses demographic information from a long range study in tree decomposition. Each piece explores the periodic information collected on fallen logs over a period of time, using the colors observed on the study sites.
