In Memoriam

Paul Dahlquist was a founding member of Gallery 114 in 1990. This is the Artist’s Statement that Paul wrote as part of the forward to his book of photographs in celebration of his 80th birthday in 2009:

“Art has always been a part of my life. Painting and drawing were my media and my identity as an artist through the 1960’s, my thirties. Family, with three sons, and teaching dominated the next twenty years. The opportunity to teach photography classes provoked some serious study and work in this medium, which quickly became my real form of expression. How natural to show what I see, and how vulnerable. Working in 35mm format with Ilford HPS film shot at 1600ASA using a Canon EOS 300 with a 28-80 zoom lens, I care to celebrate the miracle we all are. These images may help people accept themselves and each other, and make this world safer, saner and more just.”

That statement that Paul wrote to celebrate his 80th said so much about who he was. Paul was all about celebrating the miracles we all are and the miracle that life is. He loved people and had a way of shining a light on those around him. When I think of Paul as a teacher I expect he did that for his students and as a photographer he very much did that for the people he photographed and for the people with whom he shared his art. His photography was a way of connecting to people and it was one of the ways that he celebrated so many relationships in his life. More than one person will tell some version of their introduction to Paul when he said to them: “You’re beautiful. I want to photograph you.” Walking around town with Paul meant more than one stop for him to catch up with someone he saw. Paul was the only person I have known who was equally comfortable with the Director of the art museum and a person living on the street. He loved us all and I’m not sure I know a better tribute to him than that.
