Statement for 'Rosa's Angels': With hindsight comes understanding, and with understanding comes direction. This year my family and I visited the Rosa Parks Museum in Birmingham, Alabama. I got to sit in a replica of the bus; and as I did I became aware of the courage it took for the timid seamstress to keep her seat in that full bus that day in 1955. I wept for her. I wanted to comfort her from 65 years in the future. I wanted to show her how every person, white or black, has benefited from her actions. The painting shows Rosa, waiting to board the bus. She doesn't know it but she is protected by two angels, both police officers of color from the next century. The men behind her know something is up; they are behaving themselves. Maybe they know that once Rosa boards the bus, their time is over. The mill of God grinds slowly, Dr King said, but it grinds exceedingly small.
Statement for 'Thurman By Firelight': Over sixty years ago, the great mystic, Howard Thurman, was telling us in no uncertain terms what it takes to get out of this mess that we so short-sightedly think has broken out this year. "Community cannot for long feed on itself," he said, "it can only flourish with the coming of others from beyond, their unknown and undiscovered brothers." Someone has to stop hating groups and start loving individuals. Someone has to go to the others' table, sit down, and say, "I'm ready to listen."
