My work explores the unsteady relationship between humankind and nature. I strive to depict visual beauty amid topics which would generally be portrayed in their standard state of unpleasantry. I enjoy the discomfort with which I’m left with when viewing a beautiful picture that includes unexpected and ugly products of society. I have always admired the creation of beautiful things, and I remain loyal to the belief that art should be beautiful. However, this beauty can be used far beyond the topical means in which most of society embraces it. Yes, Art can be created to depict attractive things, however, it is the unexpected beautiful illustration of ugly byproducts of society that can really cause a stir. Twenty Twenty Identity 38”x75” $3000 Set within the context of classic portraiture, iridescent inks shine as a light in the persistent grey of this era. Once primarily used for concealment of identity, masks have become an everyday attempt of physical safety. However, this purpose hinders facial expression and identity itself. Childrens’ smiles are reduced to squinted eyes and lifted eyebrows, grandparent’s expressions read only by deepening wrinkles. I no longer pause to see myself wearing a mask in the mirror, but instead startled when I look upon my person without. This work portrays the truth of what my identity has become. How about yours?
Fueling the Fire 40”x30” $500 This work is A large scale painting which depicts societies current truths and reality of pollution through waste and consumerism. Although this painting describes a rather bleak reality, importance has been placed on the visual beauty from afar to further describe the hidden problems with trash and waste, and to realize the uncomfortable beauty amongst these subjects.
