OCtOBER: JEFF LEAKE & KANANI MIYAMOTO

In Gallery 114's October show, gallery artist Jeff Leake and guest artist Kanani Miyamoto explore the complex ways we express cultural ideals and our relationship to the environment in "The Effect of Small Things."  The show runs October 4 through 27, with a First Thursday opening reception for the artists, 6 to 9 pm.  Gallery hours are noon to 6 pm, Thursday through Sunday and 3 to 9 pm First Thursday.

Jeff Leake is a painter whose work often embodies parables or fables, in which he uses invented landscapes to explore human relationships and the ways we convey our cultural values. Leake's surrealistic landscape paintings offer views of the relationship between culture and nature through the lens of art history.

Guest artist Kanani Miyamoto describes herself as a passionate printmaker.  Her training in printmaking is rooted in tradition, but she pushes the standards of printmaking in her large-scale mixed-media prints and installations.  Drawing inspiration from the Japanese practice of Ikebana, a traditional form of flower arrangement, Miyamoto infuses Pacific Northwest flora and fauna with the conventional standards of Ikebana composition.
